Our first meeting will be on Thursday, September 23. All students who wish to participate must have their permission slips in before the meeting date. The first eight permission slips to return will have member priority.
11/30/10: So far we have been able to visit the kindergarten to help them write observations for their rotting pumpkin experiment. We have also gotten a request from the fourth grade to help them do special experiments during their recess period. We have discussed the possibility of creating a hidden treasure magnetic anomaly sand table that requires the use of a compass and making electromagnets with students who wish to stay in from recess to do a science investigation. Thanks, 8th graders . . . we now have two new members that have joined us for the second quarter.
9/24/10: Our cloning project is coming along nicely. We should have a batch of healthy plants ready for the window in no time. During our next meeting, we are going to work on a bit of room cleaning and prepare our science library to be used by the rest of the school.
10/1/10: We met today and began taking an inventory of materials that can be shared with other classrooms. We got quite a bit of work done. Thanks for the snack Mrs. B.! We were also joined by a former student who is at EOS now. Thanks for the extra set of hands Kyle!
10/8/10: This week, we had to assess the state of our giant Lego set. It looks good! We also checked out our propagated plants, which are doing well too. We noticed that the unused plant cuttings are getting pretty smelly and we are going to check out the scum on them under the microscope next week.
10/14/10: We looked a paramecia today! Our club is in the process of learning how to use microscopes in preparation for presentations to the lower grades. Today, we took some scummy water and fish tank slime to the microscopes and found moving protozoa. What a great experience!
10/21/10: We made a still. No, we are not making moonshine. We are making distilled water for our hydrogen fuel cell club. While our club members used many different pieces of equipment, we made a new one. This still will be running to collect enough pure water to use in the fuel cell without contaminating it. Thanks DB, for the wonderful snack!
Please note the following new policy: The late bus is available for students staying after school for the Science Club. The late bus leaves the school at 4:40 and will take students home in accordance with BOE transportation policies. If a parent/guardian chooses to pick up a his/her child, please provide a note for me to see. All Science club members will be escorted to the lower lobby at approximately 4:30. Students taking the late bus will be escorted to the appropriate bus. Students waiting for their ride will wait in the lobby with Mr. Rossi. If a student's ride has not arrived when the late bus is ready to depart, the student will be escorted to the appropriate late bus for safe transport home.
